Shanghai Enhances Dental Care with Expanded Community Clinics

In response to growing demand for accessible dental care, Shanghai has established 83 standardized community dental clinics, offering residents a variety of dental services and healthcare options.

Each clinic, typically covering around 200 square meters, is staffed by five dentists and four nurses, providing essential dental treatments such as fillings, root canal therapy, pit and fissure sealing, periodontal cleaning, tooth extractions, and denture restoration. Additionally, some locations have expanded services, offering thermal gutta-percha fillings, orthodontic treatments, and dental implant restoration.

A standout example is the Changfeng Street Baiyu Community Health Service Center in the Putuo district. This clinic is fully equipped with advanced tools, including panoramic X-ray machines, dental film machines, ultrasonic scalers, apex locators, and pulp vitality testers. The center not only delivers standard services like fillings and crowns but also specializes in periodontal and orthodontic care, addressing the complete oral health needs of the community. Moreover, the center offers a unique herbal mouthwash solution called “Yulu,” known for its success in treating recurrent oral ulcers.

An official from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health shared that by the end of 2025, the city plans to increase the availability of these community dental clinics, with a focus on selecting top-tier facilities to lead the development of dental care and services. By 2030, Shanghai aims to achieve full coverage, ensuring that more residents can access quality dental care conveniently within their own neighborhoods.
